  • Belarus - Wed, 01 Feb 2012 13:30:00 GMT

    Travel Summary

    • There have been a series of street protests in Minsk and other cities across Belarus most commonly on Wednesday evenings. Many arrests have been made and some violence has occurred including in the course of arbitrary arrests of passers-by. More protests are expected. You should be alert and avoid any gatherings, rallies or protests.

    • There is a general threat from terrorism. There was an explosion at October Square (Oktyabrskaya) metro station in central Minsk on the evening of 11 April 2011 resulting in 15 fatalities. No British nationals were affected. We advise all visitors to Minsk to exercise caution at this time and be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners. See our terrorism abroad page.

    • Around 4,000 British nationals (Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Belarus) visit Belarus every year. Most visits are trouble-free. See General - Consular Assistance Statistics.

    • You should obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. See General - Insurance.
